Student Resources

Prospective Students

The Office of Disability Services encourages you to understand the rights of individuals with disabilities.

  1. Start early!!
  2. Ask parents, counselors and your doctor to explain any aspect of your disability that you have difficulty understanding. Remember: You will be the person explaining your disability and your needs once you arrive at the university – requesting accommodations will depend upon your knowledge of what you need.
  3. Admissions offices are separate from disability services offices. Students will be accepted to the university based solely on academic merit; registration with and receiving accommodations from the disability services office will depend upon specific documentation of your disability.
  4. Check the website of the disability services office at the university you are interested in. Print off and be familiar with the policies and procedures for registering for services, and pay particular attention to the disability documentation required for registration. Documentation requirements may vary between schools based on the requirements of the school’s curriculum.
  5. Print off or ask for a copy of the documentation required for registering with the disability services office. Make an extra copy of the documentation requirements and give one to your doctor so that s/he can help provide any documentation you may be missing.
  6. Visit the disability services office at the university you are interested in and interview staff members. This is the very best way to determine if the services offered match your needs.
  7. Ask the disability services office what sort of assistive technology they offer through the office or university. Take the time to become familiar with the technology they offer.
  8. Inquire if the university offers tutoring services if you think they may be necessary. Become familiar with the policy / procedure for requesting tutoring.
